How to Help Your Portrait Session Go Smoothly

So you’ve booked a photography session and the day has arrived. You just have to look nice and you’re ready to go, right? Unfortunately not!

As an experienced photographer, I’ve seen my fair share of photoshoots go amazing and also really struggle. While I always do my best to accommodate to my clients in any state, there are some things I wish they knew they could do beforehand to ensure a smoother shoot!

I will always come prepared with the equipment, a game plan, and even a back up pair of shoes, but these few things below are what YOU can do to help make your session ROCK.

3 Ways to Guarantee a Smooth-Sailing Portrait Session

1. Arrive EARLY

If you are ever wondering what time you should arrive to a scheduled photoshoot, the answer is at least 10 minutes early. I am not suggesting this because your photographer needs to see you 10 minutes earlier than scheduled, but because by arriving early, you can take a few breaths and organize yourself (or you and your family) before the madness begins!

An early arrival will set the tone for the whole shoot. Instead of feeling rushed or frazzled, you can take a few calming breaths and begin without any major anxiety. Without question, the camera captures anxiety behind a smile almost every time. So do yourself a favor and arrive with plenty of time to relax!

2. Prep Everyone for What to Expect

Remember in grade school when you practiced “Stop, Drop, and Roll” for fire safety? This same preparation should be applied to a photoshoot, especially when kids are involved! By talking through and acting out how a session will go, you are modeling how you expect your kids (and even dad!) to act. This can make such a difference in a successful photo session!

A few days before the shoot, walk through the timing of how it will all work out. Start by talking about what you will wear, what time you will leave, how long it will take to get to the location, and what types of poses you will be doing. Even include what you will do when it’s all over! This simple step will take the guesswork out of anyone unsure of what to expect. I promise it helps!

3. Relax and Have Fun

Above all, don’t stress too much about getting the perfect shot for your Christmas card or for grandma’s birthday gift. Your stress will show and that is the opposite of what you want! While some things are out of your control (weather, traffic, or lighting), you can control your attitude and once you’re there, the photos will turn out better if you are relaxed!

I know that is easier said than done, but I always try to help my clients relax as much as possible so their true joy and happiness stands out. If I have to crack a joke or two to lighten the mood, I happily will!

A perfectly smooth photo session is absolutely possible. I’ve seen it happen! Just know that your photographer will be hoping for the same thing and by working together, you will undoubtedly be happy with the results.
