Let’s Get Cozy: Arvada Family Photographer's Tips for In-Home Lifestyle Family Sessions

There is something so incredibly special about an in-home session. Whether we are celebrating a new baby, a milestone birthday, or just a slow Saturday morning, your home is the heart of your story. It is where you feel most like yourself, and as an Arvada family photographer, those are the moments I live to capture.

However, I know the thought of inviting a photographer into your "real life" can feel a little daunting. You might be eyeing the basket of laundry that needs to be folded or the toy basket that exploded in the living room. Not to worry, my goal is to capture your connection, not a Pinterest-perfect aestheticly pleasing home.

To help you get ready for our time together, here are three simple ways to prepare your space and your mindset for a stress-free session.

1. Clear the Clutter (The Five-Minute Toss)

You do not need to deep-clean your baseboards or scrub the grout for me! What does help is a quick "clutter sweep" in the rooms where we will be shooting. Most often, this includes the master bedroom, the nursery, and the living room.

The camera tends to pick up small distractions like remote controls, tissue boxes, or half-empty water bottles on nightstands. Spending five minutes tossing those items into a laundry basket and hiding it in a closet makes a huge difference. By clearing the surfaces, we allow the focus to stay exactly where it belongs: on your family.

2. Bring in a "Hype Person"

If we are working with a toddler or a newborn, having an extra set of hands can be a game-changer. Whether it is a grandparent, a close family friend, having someone there to help "wrangle" can take the pressure off Mom and Dad.

Having a friend on hand allows you to stay present in the moment instead of worrying about the logistics of the "behind the scenes" chaos.

3. Relax and Embrace the Magic of Child-Led Sessions

This is truly the most important "rule" of all. The beauty of an in-home lifestyle session is that we aren't tied to a rigid schedule or a perfect pose. If your toddler decides they only want to play with their wooden blocks instead of the activity we originally planned, that is exactly where the magic happens. By following their lead, we capture their true personality in a space where they feel safe and confident.

If the baby needs a mid-session snack, we simply pause and feed the baby. There is no rush and no pressure to "perform" for the lens.

The heart of an in-home session is found in those real, unscripted interactions. When you relax and let the morning unfold naturally, your true bond shines through. I am looking for the way you tuck a stray curl behind your daughter’s ear while she plays or the way your husband makes you laugh while you are both at the coffee maker.

Trust the process and let your kids be exactly who they are right now. Those candid, messy, beautiful moments are always the ones you will cherish the most.
