Fall is a time of connection, warmth, and togetherness, making it the perfect backdrop for family photos. However, finding the right location is key to transforming those precious family moments into lasting memories you want to display forever.
As a professional family photographer, I’ve developed a keen eye for selecting spots that not only enhance the beauty of the season but also cater to the unique dynamics of each family. While I 100% am happy to work with my clients when they have input and ideas, I also can make suggestions and recommendations based on my experience and knowledge behind the camera.
So whether you’re looking to have photos taken for your family Christmas card or simply wanting to capture this moment in time, keep in mind these location-specific photography tips that can make a big difference in the outcome of your fall family session.
5 Location Tips for Fall Family Photos
1. Light
Light is the heart and soul of photography. During fall, the golden hour—just after sunrise and before sunset—offers an enchanting glow that beautifully complements the warm colors of the foliage. I prefer locations that provide open spaces where sunlight can filter through trees, creating a soft, glowing effect. Avoiding harsh midday light is crucial, as it can cast unflattering shadows.
I also pay attention to the sun’s direction. Locations where the sun sets behind hills or dense trees can provide a stunning backdrop. On cloudy days, the soft, even light can also be beautiful, and I always have a backup plan in mind to ensure we can make the most of any weather situation.
Unless specifically desired, I also look for locations with limited distractions (large signs, construction zones, bright structures, etc) so that the focus can be on the faces and the light that brings them to life on camera.
2. Accessibility
While picturesque spots may be tempting, accessibility is essential, especially for families with young children or older members. I look for locations that are easy to reach, with parking nearby and minimal walking required. If the location involves a bit of a trek, I ensure that it’s manageable for everyone involved.
Having nearby amenities like restrooms or picnic areas can significantly enhance the experience. A comfortable setting allows for families to regroup, change outfits, or take a break, making the session more enjoyable for everyone.
3. Structural Elements
In addition to natural beauty, structural elements can add depth and context to family photos. Features like rustic barns, fences, or charming bridges provide visual interest and can create beautiful contrasts against the colorful foliage. They also offer natural framing for family portraits, helping to tell a story in each image.
Similarly, I look for areas with rocks, large trees, or stumps that can be used to sit or stand on. These natural props always provide a special touch to the photos and make staging each member of the family a little easier.
4. Space for Movement
I have found that the Fall season often brings an energy to family sessions —think children playing in leaves or families exploring a scenic area together. Choosing a location with plenty of space for movement is essential to capturing those candid, joyful moments.
I have found success in shooting in open fields, parks, or woodland areas that allow families to engage with their surroundings and one another openly and easily.
5. Seasonal Foliage and Variety
One of the highlights of a fall session is the stunning foliage. I look for locations that showcase a variety of trees, bushes, and other plants that display the rich colors of the season—from fiery reds to vibrant yellows.
Areas that offer a mix of textures, like a meadow bordered by colorful trees or a path lined with fallen leaves, create opportunities for lots of compositions. On the flip side, I try to avoid any dead or barren areas as they don’t offer the photos much strength or pop that is typically desired.
Location Makes a Difference
Choosing the right location for a fall family session is important, but your family is what brings your images to life. The location is simply the stage. By considering these elements, I can ensure that your family session captures your genuine connections and creates unforgettable memories.
As the leaves change and families come together, I’m passionate about helping you find the perfect location that represents your family’s story and the essence of the season. Let’s create beautiful images that you’ll treasure for a lifetime!
