Tips for Choosing Between Indoor and Outdoor Maternity Photography Sessions from an Arvada Maternity Photographer

Capturing This Beautiful Season, Your Way

You’re dreaming about maternity photos. You want to remember this season - the shape of your growing belly, the light in your eyes as you think about meeting your baby, the way your partner gently holds your hand. But now you’re stuck at a crossroads: Should we do the session outside or inside a studio?

As an Arvada maternity photographer, I get this question often, and honestly, it’s not always a black-and-white answer. One client I worked with recently was right there with you. She knew she wanted to document this season, but wasn’t sure where. She wasn't totally comfortable in her changing body, and she wanted the flexibility to wear two outfits. She also cared about having a private space to change - and with Colorado weather being, well, Colorado, the decision felt extra overwhelming.

Spoiler: she went with an indoor session. And it ended up being exactly what she needed.

So let’s walk through how you can make the best decision for your maternity session - one that honors your comfort, your vision, and this fleeting, beautiful time.

Hold On - It's Not Just About the Location

Believe me when I say that beautiful images aren’t bound to a backdrop.

As an Arvada maternity photographer, when I guide a client through choosing between an outdoor and indoor session, we always start by pressing pause on location and asking the deeper question: What do you really want to remember?

Whether it’s the golden glow of a mountain at sunset or the soft light falling across your belly while you rest on your living room couch, the core of the session is always the same. It’s about you and your love for the little one you’re eagerly waiting to meet.

So rather than getting caught up in the idea of what maternity photos "should" look like, let’s root your decision in what actually fits you.

What to Consider When Choosing Indoor vs Outdoor Maternity Photos

1. Think About Your Comfort First

This is not the time to push through something that doesn’t feel right in your body. Some expectant moms feel fabulous and energized during pregnancy. Others - understandably - don’t. I remind every client that your comfort is key to having a relaxed, joyful session.

  • Mobility plays a huge role. If you tire easily or don’t feel confident walking around uneven ground, indoor might be your best friend.

  • Weather stress isn’t worth it. Even mild discomfort (hello, unexpected wind or chilly air) can zap energy and make the whole experience feel off.

  • If you’re self-conscious in front of the camera, knowing you have privacy can make a big difference. Being indoors gives you a little more control and freedom.

2. Outfit Options and Ease of Changing

I love when clients want to mix it up with a second look or a different vibe mid-session. But quick outfit changes aren’t super convenient in a forest or field. If styling is a big part of your vision, an indoor setup offers more flexibility.

That doesn’t mean outdoor sessions can’t work - we just have to be strategic. Long cardigans, simple wrap dresses, and chunky sweaters can layer beautifully (and function like costume changes without needing a full wardrobe switch).

Either way, I’m here to help you plan stylish options that don’t add stress.

3. The Colorado Factor: Weather, Light, and Time of Year

Here in Colorado, we have some of the most stunning natural backdrops in the world... and also some of the most unpredictable weather. Even in spring or early fall, I’ve had sessions go from sunny skies to sideways snow in minutes.

If you’re picturing wildflowers and sunshine, I’ll help you time your session carefully. But truthfully, weather is never a guarantee.

An indoor session holds steady no matter what’s happening outside. Plus, we can work with beautiful diffused light through windows that adds such warmth and intimacy to your photos.

4. What Story Do You Want These Images to Tell?

Do you want a nature-filled gallery that reflects your love of the outdoors? Is this part of your baby story something you want to document in your home - the space where your little one will soon live, cry, nurse, nap, and grow up?

Both approaches have meaning.

An outdoor session might beautifully reflect family hikes, your Colorado roots, or your joy in open landscapes. An indoor session can be cozy, calm, and deeply personal. The nursery rocking chair, your hands holding a pair of tiny socks, the way sunlight hits your hair in the quiet corner you already imagine holding your baby.

There’s no right answer. Just the one that fits your story.

What Really Matters In The End

Whether we’re standing in a snowy meadow or swirling around your living room with soft music playing - the goal is the same: to capture this season tenderly and truly.

The environment matters, yes. But your connection with your baby, the love you and your partner share, and the uniqueness of your motherhood journey? That’s the real art. That’s what makes an image linger.

If you’re still deciding what kind of session suits you best, I’m here to talk it through - no pressure, just support.
