Before You Go: An Arvada Family Photographer's Guide to a Flawless Photoshoot

Updated: Sep 17

There’s a certain energy I can feel the moment a family steps out of their car. Sometimes it’s nervous, but every now and then, a family arrives with a sense of calm and excitement that is absolutely contagious.

Those are the sessions that feel like magic. Not because everyone is perfectly behaved, but because everyone is wonderfully present. It’s in those moments that I know the family came prepared not just with their outfits, but with a mindset ready for real, beautiful moments.

This often comes from thoughtful preparation—packing a pre-session snack to avoid tummy troubles, or even showing the kids my photo and telling them, “She’s a mommy too.” Simple gestures like that build a bridge of trust before I ever click the shutter.

That feeling of ease is what I want for every family I work with. If you’re gearing up for your very first professional photo session, take a deep breath. You’ve got this. And I’d love to walk you through a few tried-and-true tips that will get you across the finish line smiling.

Setting Expectations (and Letting Go of Perfection)

Here’s a little secret: perfect family photo sessions don’t exist. And that’s exactly what makes them beautiful.

As an family photographer in Arvada, Colorado I’ve worked with all kinds of kiddos - from little ones bursting with extra energy to children who need a gentle, sensory-conscious approach. I’ve seen snacks save the day and meltdowns turn into magical cuddle shots. Through all of it, I’ve learned that preparation is less about perfection and more about creating the space for connection.

A little guidance goes a long way, and my goal is to make your session feel fun, joyful, and full of real moments (with plenty of wiggles welcome).

Let’s get into some steps that will set you up for a calm, connected session.

Step 1: Walk Your Kiddos Through What to Expect

One of the most powerful preparation tools? Talking to your children ahead of time.

  • Show them my photo from my website so they know who will be taking their picture. I'm not a stranger - I’m just another mom who gets it.

  • Use kid-friendly language to explain what we’re doing: “We’re going (to a park or your favorite mountain) to take some photos for our house.”

  • If your child has specific needs, feel free to share that with me ahead of time. I’ll come prepared with the right pace, space, and sensitivity to support them.

Step 2: Timing Is Everything (Yes, Even Nap Timing)

When planning your session time, I’ll work closely with you to find the best window when your kids are typically happiest.

  • Late afternoon light is beautiful, but not every kiddo thrives at golden hour. We’ll find a balance that works for your lighting and their energy.

  • Avoid scheduling right after a big meal or too close to bedtime. A light snack before the session is ideal - enough to curb hunger, not enough to weigh them down.

And if your toddler still melts down after we plan our timing to perfection? That’s okay too. I’ve seen some of the most heartfelt images come from just holding space for a tough moment.

Step 3: Choose Outfits That Feel Like "You," Not a Catalog

Coordinating everyone can feel like a daunting puzzle, but don’t worry - part of working with me is getting access to personalized styling support.

  • I’ll guide you through outfit ideas that complement your family’s vibe while still looking polished on camera.

  • Think texture, soft colors, and clothes you can move in (hello, bear hugs and shoulder rides).

  • Moms, if you’re feeling nervous about what to wear or how you'll look, please know: I see your beauty, and I’ll help you feel it too.

You don’t need a closet full of new clothes or matching bow ties to “do it right.” Just come dressed as your best, most

relaxed selves.

Step 4: Trust the Process (Even the Wiggly Parts)

Here’s something I wish every parent knew: when I’m chatting, asking questions, or walking your family to a new spot, I’m not just keeping busy. I’m helping everyone - especially kids - settle into the moment naturally.

  • Movement helps release nervous energy in kids (and, honestly, adults too)

  • We’ll build on little moments rather than force big ones

  • I never expect “perfect” behavior. I expect real kids. And I love them that way.

If you’re ever doubting whether things are working mid-session, look at me. I’ll be smiling. We’re creating something special - even if it doesn’t look like that Pinterest board.

Step 5: Let Me Do the Heavy Lifting (You're Doing Enough)

Don’t worry if you're wondering, "Am I forgetting something?" You’re not.

  • You booked the session

  • You prepped your family

  • You showed up

That’s huge.

Once we’re together, I take the lead. I’ll guide you, reassure you, and help you settle in so we can capture moments you’ll treasure.

If you're juggling diaper bags, snacks, or toddler tantrums, just remember: you’re not doing it wrong. This is the magic. And I’m here to capture it.

Why This Matters More Than You Know

It’s more than just a few pictures. These sessions are a time capsule, the little hand in yours, the wind in your child’s wild hair.

These images won’t just be for you today. They’re for your future self, for your grown children flipping through albums years from now.

So if some part of you is still nervous about how you’ll look, or worried your kids won’t “cooperate,” let me hold that tender truth:

You’re already doing enough.
